IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENS

ICL - Implantable Conatact Lens
RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange

IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENS

Implantable contact lenses (ICL) are inserted through a small incision in the cornea and placed behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. These thin, pliable lenses can be an alternative to LASIK surgery and are used to correct conditions that laser surgery may be unable to correct, such as extreme myopia (nearsightedness). The ICL procedure is virtually pain free and has a 95 percent success rate.

REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE

In refractive lens exchange (RLE) eye surgery, your eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial one to achieve sharper focus. While RLE technically does not have FDA approval, some surgeons in certain circumstances will use the procedure off label.

This type of use is perfectly legal and sometimes a practical option for elective vision correction surgery, particularly for older people and younger people in some circumstances.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ICLs & IOLs?

Implantable contact lenses are often referred to as phakic IOLs, which may cause some confusion when trying to distinguish between an ICL and an IOL. The term "phakic" refers to an eye with the natural lens still intact. Therefore, the main difference between implantable contact lenses and traditional IOLs is the fact that an ICL works in conjunction with the eye's crystalline lens and an IOL replaces the eye's natural lens.
